Host Mt. Pearl wins their second in a row

The Kensington Vipers and host Mt. Pearl Blades were both seekin g to go 2-0 in their game Wednesday evening at the 2024 Don Johnson Memorial Cup Atlantic Junior Hoxkey Championships.  However as we know, when two 1-0-0 teams colide, only one can come out 2-0-0.  In this case it was the host Mt. Pearl Blades who took the first 2-0-0 record of the tournameng as they defeated Kensington P.E.I. 6-2.

Brett Ballum of the P.E.I. Vipers scored his third of the tournament to give the Vipers an early 1-0 lead before the Blades took command with three consecutive goals including a short-handed effort from Nathan Flynn to take a 3-1 lead after twenty minutes.  Evan Wicks scored the other two goals for the Blades in the first period.

In the seciond period, Carson MacDougall's power-play goal with an assist from Ballum brought the Vipers back to within one at 3-2 before Cameron Frost scored a power-play goal with only 6 seconds remaining to give the Blades a 4-2 lead after forty minutes.

In the third, Nicholas Moore and Evan Cross on the power-play tallied, Cross's goal coming with 1:32 remaining to give Mt. Pearl a 6-2 win as the Blades improved to 2-0-0 thorugh the four game round-robin.  The Vipers after a strong start in their earlier game with the Koyotes fell to 1-1-0.

 

A huge day for playoff positioning Thursday with the Kent Koyotes of New Brunswick playing the Antigonish Jr. Bulldogs at 12:00 nnon Newfoundland standard time, followed by the Vipers and St. John's Capitals at 3:00 p.m. and then at 7:30 p.m. the Blades will be looking to go 3-0-0 when they play the Koyotes.
