After not defeating the Kent Koyotes in four regular season games this season in inter-provincial play, the Kensington Vipers from Pince Edward Island picked a sensational time to record their first victory of the season over the Koyotes as Brent Ballum scored a pair of goals including the game winner with 16 seconds left in regulation to gove the Vipers a 4-3 win Wednesday.
The Vipers gave up an early 3-0 lead and allowed the Koyotes to tie the game at 3-3 before Ballum's game-winner. Other Kensington goal scorers were Marshall Gallant and Clark Allain. The Vipers led 2-0 after forty minutes scoring one goal in each of the opening two periods before Ballum's first goal made it 3-0 Kesington in the third. The Koyotes then began to howl as they stormed back with three consecutive goals from Joshua Breault, Mathieu Poirier and Julien LeBlanc before Ballum's game winner in the final minute.
The Koyotes outshot the Vipers 39-34. The Vipers after a lengthy bus trip will be back in action tonight when they play the Newfoundland champions - the St. John's Capitals who opened 23-24 Atlantic Championship with a loss to host Mt. Pearl Tuesday evening.
